Five Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your Senior Session | Michigan Senior Photographer

Senior sessions are so close to my heart because I love how limitless a single session can be! Here are a few tips, tricks + ideas to get the most of your session —

1. Your Style

This is the best starting point when planning your session. Sessions give you a chance to wear something that might be a bit more bold than you typically wear. I suggest giving diversity with 3 outfits.

I love a mixture of your favorite outfit, a more dressed-up outfit, and then your favorite casual outfit.

Examples: I love long dresses that flow with movement, neutral colors with a pop of your favorite color, ripped jeans, textured sweaters, fun designs or even a bold pair of shoes! I also love documenting color (pinks, oranges, reds, blues are perfect for adding fun colors into your photos).

However, I would avoid doing the same color (example: only brown outfits) for every outfit change.

2. Location

I have a list of locations that I love sending to my seniors when we are in the planning stages of their session. I like to start with what type of location first - city or nature? For some, downtown Detroit with the tall buildings and bold architecture fit their street style best. For others, somewhere in a field of flowers or lush gardens (like a greenhouse!) are better suited. It all depends on your outfits and what you think fits your personality the best.

Location ideas: an open field at sunset, colorful gardens, woodsy forest, city buildings, a small downtown area, an indoor studio for some fun, creative shots!

3. Hobbies

Not everybody has a hobby they want to include, but if you have something you love - bring it! Whether it’s a soccer ball, varsity jacket, canvas + some paint, some polaroid cameras, makeup, an instrument, even a pet! There are so many things that we can include and get creative with to showcase all that is important to you. Even a location (record store, library, art museum) could be included. It’s all up to you!

4. Accessories!

This is where we can get really creative! Hats, glasses, flowers, jewelry, fun shoes, even something as simple as throwing up your hair for your casual outfit. Your options are truly endless here and adding just one or two extra things can really create magic at your session.

4. Getting Comfortable

It’s totally okay to be nervous but I promise to guide you the entire time. Photoshoots are a lot less about photos, and more about getting comfortable, having fun + creating movement. I want my photos to have a more candid feel so that I can truly capture your laugh, the glow in your face and all that you are! Feel free to reach out to me personally with any outfit inspos or mood boards you may have for your session - I am here to help! : )
