Five Songs to Play at Your Wedding

Last year I did a blog called “Seven Songs to Play at Your Wedding” which so many of you loved. It was dedicated to some untraditional love songs to utilize for first dances, ceremony songs or even for dinner music. Music has always been a major part of my life and finding little, untraditional songs is almost like a hobby of mine. Weddings are so special and it sends chills down my arms when I watch the couple surrounded by their guests, dancing and screaming the lyrics to their favorites songs together. It’s a moment of pure serendipity and bliss. I hope you enjoy some of my recommendations, if you can’t use them for your wedding I hope at least you can enjoy them during wedding planning!

1. Electric Feel - Henry Green Cover, original by MGMT

This is #1 on the list because I am truly in love with this cover. I listened to Electric Feel by MGMT so often when I was in high school. The original is more eccentric and you really wouldn’t think of ever using it as a love song. I love this cover so much - stripped down to it’s ambient form - it is so moody, beautiful and romantic.

2. You’re My Best Friend - Rudy Mancuso Cover, Original by Queen

One night earlier this year I was photographing a reception when this song came on. I was instantly in love and after photographing the first dance, I wrote down the song to find later on. It was obvious which song it was but this cover was so earthy and upbeat. At first listen, you might not think you can slow dance to it but I promise if you play it one night at home and practice, it’s the cutest.

3. Butterflies - Kacey Musgraves

Let me preface this with, I really don’t like country music. HOWEVER, Kacey Musgraves is incredible. Okay, so if you know her discography, it’s basically psychedelic country and I just love how original she has created her style. This song is so cute and it just feels like a happy, warm, summer night spent with the love of your life. I picture an open field with tall grass, at sunset, dancing and running around with your favorite person. I can easily picture a first dance to this song!

4. Northern Wind - City & Colour

I have loved City & Colour’s music since I was younger. As you listen to this song, just read along to the lyrics. They are so poetic and lovely. Dallas Green’s voice is in my top 5 favorite sounds. Mixing the lyrics with his voice & the sounds of the guitar - this song is just perfect for a first dance.

You're the Northern Wind
Sending shivers down my spine
You're like fallen leaves
In an autumn night

You're the lullaby
Singing me to sleep
You are the other half
You're like the missing piece

Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
You don't know
What you do to me

You are all four seasons
Rolled into one
You're like the cold December snow
In the warm July sun

I'm the jet black sky
That's just before the rain
Like the mighty current
Pulling you under the waves

5. Beloved - Mumford & Sons

The other morning I was driving and caught the end of this song. The lyrics and emotion of the song drew me in immediately. I looked up the lyrics later that day and added the song to my playlist. The beginning at first has a very “Sunday Bloody Sunday” sound but the ending is gold. This is a very summery-feeling song. I’m unsure if it’s a song you can slow dance to but I would look up some melodic covers of it. It’s just a really beautiful song.

“Before you leave, you must know you are beloved. And before you leave, remember I was with you.”
